Winning Effort

August 12, 1998|By TERI JOHNSON

Helen Barnhart was looking for a recipe to make for her uncle's birthday, and the 13-year-old Hagerstown resident found that Lemon-Cream Coconut Cake was a winner.

The cake took grand champion honors at the recent Washington County Ag Expo auction, bringing in $280 from high bidder Ellsworth Electric Co.

Helen, a member of Chewsville 4-H Club, found the recipe in "Debbi Fields' Great American Desserts," the companion book to Fields' series on public television.

Helen, the daughter of Robert Barnhart and Carol Kreykenbohm-Barnhart, will be an eighth-grader at Northern Middle School.

She says she and her uncle, Bill Kreykenbohm of Falls Church, Va., both like coconut. She plans to make the cake for his birthday in December.

The key is to assemble all the ingredients before you start baking the cake, Helen says.

"It's easy to make once you get everything together," says Helen, who baked the champion iced lemon cupcakes at last year's Ag Expo.

This year she also was reserve champion in the fashion review for a cotton jumper that she made and cross-stitch champion for her eyeglass case. Her rabbit, Peter, also captured an award.

Helen says she likes being able to enter many categories.

"I don't have a favorite; I like it all," says Helen, a member of Chewsville 4-H Club for about four years.

Her sister, Becky, 10, also is in Chewsville 4-H Club, and her brother Bobby, 7, is a member of the Clovers.

Helen plays on a Hagerstown Soccer Club traveling team, the Galaxy, and is a member of Washington County Rabbit Club.

She wants to be a veterinarian. Veterinary medicine was among the topics she studied this summer at a three-week camp she attended at Drew University in Madison, N.J.

Helen says she likes to cook, and she enjoys making desserts.

She already has planned her strategy for next year's Ag Expo: she'll be baking a triple-layer chocolate cake.
