CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death of a man found in a burning mobile home Tuesday morning in Greene Township, Pa.

"I was just heading out for work and saw the smoke coming out" from the man's home, said Dave Stitley, a resident of the Northwood Mobile Home Park, 2004 Philadelphia Ave.

The door was unlocked when he entered and found the man on the living room couch, he said.

"I grabbed his leg to pull him out, but it was already too late," said Stitley.

Franklin County Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer said the man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head from a .30-caliber rifle.

Engine Sgt. Jamie Hammond of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Co., said the fire was called in at 7:34 a.m. The fire was contained to the kitchen, but smoke and heat caused damage throughout the trailer, he said.

Firefighters were on the scene until 11:45 a.m., Hammond said.

Units from Shippensburg, Pa., Letterkenny Army Depot, Pleasant Hall and Chambersburg assisted, along with an ambulance and advanced life support unit from Chambersburg.

Stitley said the man had been ill for a couple of weeks, but had talked to him the night before "and he seemed like he was doing better."

An autopsy was scheduled for today at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa., police said.
