Crocs rock Suns in 11

August 10, 1998

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Cape Fear's Nate James stroked a one-out RBI single off Hagerstown reliever Brian Bowles to score pinch runner Mo Blakeney in the 11th inning Sunday to lift the Crocs to a 4-3 victory over the Suns.

Cape Fear (26-25, 69-52 overall) came back from 1-0 and 3-1 deficits to force the game into extra innings to keep Hagerstown (23-28, 67-54) back in the South Atlantic League Northern Division pack.

The Crocs' Danny Bravo drew a leadoff walk to open the 11th and moved to second on Josh Reding's sacrifice bunt to set up James.

Hagerstown broke a scoreless tie and starter Edward Quezada's no-hitter with one swing as Bobby Cripps blasted a solo home run - his 25th of the year - for a 1-0 lead.

Cape Fear evened the score with two outs in the sixth against Hagerstown starter Clayton Andrews as James singled and scored on Henry Mateo's double to the left-field corner.

The Suns regained the lead in the seventh as Vernon Wells led off with a double and scored when Greg Morrison's grounder to second base was booted by Mateo. Josh Phelps followed with a double down the left-field line for a 3-1 lead.

The Crocs came back in the seventh as Scott Sandusky and Scott Zech drew two-out walks to chase Andrews. Colin Brackeen came on in relief only to allow RBI singles to Bravo and Reding to tie the game.
