The Martinsburg Pre-School, sponsored by the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board and Trinity United Methodist Church, will hold an open house for prospective students and their parents from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at 220 W. Martin St., Martinsburg, W.Va.

The class for 4- and 5-year-olds is full, but there are a few openings in the class for 3-year-olds for the 1998-99 school year.

The 3-year-olds meet from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A variety of activities are offered that focus on recreational, social and educational development. Students learn about the calendar, weather, letters, colors and numbers to prepare them for school.

They also have the chance to play outside or in a multipurpose room, as well as take field trips and listen to speakers.

The cost for the program is $65 per month and there is a registration fee of $10.

A 13-lesson course on boating skills and seamanship will be offered next month by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 56 of Chambersburg, Pa.

The course begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Room 17 of Chambersburg High School. The two-hour classes will be held weekly through October and twice weekly in November.

The course will cover choosing a boat and equipment, rules and signs to follow, boat handling and more.

The course is applicable to those interested in boating and personal watercraft, such as jet skis.

Classes are open to the public and reference books and study guides can be purchased, although they are not required.

The Fort Loudon Hoedown country and western festival will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Loudon (Pa.) Community Grounds.

Entertainment includes country line dancing at 4 p.m. with Silver Spur, the Whirlybirds at 5 p.m., and the D&S Bluegrass Band at 6 p.m.

The event will begin with yard sale, antique and craft stands being set up at 7 a.m. Food sales will begin at 10 a.m. and game stands open at 11 a.m.

A donation of $5 is asked for yard and craft sale space.

The hoedown is sponsored by Trinity United Church of Christ in Fort Loudon.
