Teen charged in robbery of three

The robbery of three young people in the West End Wednesday night led to the arrest Thursday of a Hagerstown teen-ager, according to Hagerstown City Police.

Devonne Arlington Johnson, 17, of 641/2 W. Franklin St., was charged as an adult with one county of armed robbery, two counts of attempted robbery and one county of felony theft, police said.

Johnson was arrested after being spotted by police on the first block of West North Street. He was being held by police late Thursday while awaiting a hearing before a District Court bail commissioner this morning.


Three juveniles told police they were in the area of Buena Vista Avenue and Lanvale Street at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday when a man approached and began talking to them.

The man postured as if he had a gun and demanded money and valuables, police said.

The juveniles turned over a small amount of cash and some jewelry and fled, police said.

Stereo equipment stolen from truck

The Washington County Sheriff's Department on Thursday was investigating the theft of stereo speakers and an amplifier from a truck parked in the driveway of a home near Hagerstown.

The theft took place between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday when someone entered a 1989 Chevy Blazer at 11 N. Colonial Drive and took two 12-inch stereo speakers and one amplifier stored in a plywood case in the rear of the vehicle, police said.

The stolen items are valued at $450. The Blazer also sustained an estimated $200 damage to the rear hatchback.

Woman escapes from hospital

FREDERICK, Md. - What began as a traffic arrest Thursday morning, led to an escape from a hospital emergency room and resulted in a Frederick woman facing numerous criminal charges, according to the Frederick Police Department.

Donna L. Brown, 31, of 7607 McKaig Road, was originally charged with driving while intoxicated, hit and run, driving with a suspended license, negligent driving and speeding after an accident at 6:30 a.m., according to a police report.

She was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries she suffered during the accident, police said. During treatment, she left the hospital emergency room and returned to her home, police said.

She was taken into custody again after a brief foot chase, police said.

In addition to the driving arrest, Brown was charged with providing a false name, making a false report to police, escape and theft, police said.

Brown was being held without bond at the Frederick County Detention Center.

Van stolen

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Borough police said a van was stolen from a church parking lot Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police report, the 1983 Chevy 20 Series van was stolen between 4 and 6 p.m. from the parking lot of the Chambersburg First Church of God, 339 Lincoln Way East. The van belongs to William R. Raudabaugh, of 751 Broad St.

The van is brown with a wide tan stripe along the side, police said. It had Pennsylvania registration PAPROSS, according to police.

Frederick manfaces drug charges

A Frederick man who was apprehended Wednesday evening in the first block of West Church Street was charged with numerous drug violations.

Kevin Bernard Roberts, 33, of 5842 Hollyhock Place, was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, distribution of cocaine, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to Hagerstown City Police.

Roberts was taken into custody at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Two break-insreported to police

Two break-ins and a broken window were among the calls handled Wednesday by area police.

Hagerstown City Police went to Ernie and Kitty's Restaurant in the 200 block of South Potomac Street for a window broken out on the building.

Washington County Sheriff's deputies responded to a break-in at Joy's Liquors, 16509 National Pike in Huyetts, where a quantity of liquor was stolen.

At the Washington County Job Development Center, 22930 Federal Lookout Road in Smithsburg, deputies investigated a break-in where stereo equipment and $20 in cash were taken after a rear door was forced open.
