Public Square vote delayed

August 05, 1998

A long-awaited vote by the Waynesboro Borough Council on a controversial decision to change the town's Public Square, scheduled for tonight, was postponed because of illness of members or members' family, Borough Manager Lloyd Hamberger said Tuesday.

He said he will ask the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to extend a deadline on the decision until a special meeting can be scheduled or it can be added to the agenda on an upcoming regular council meeting, he said.

In mid-July, residents, downtown merchants, Borough Council members and PennDOT officials met to try to visualize how the square would look if the sidewalks were moved up to the traffic corridor.

Such a plan would eliminate about a dozen angled parking spaces that serve two banks and a handful of businesses that line the square.

The borough can vote to close the square to parking, leave some parking places in place or do nothing.
