The Washington County Board of Education on Tuesday approved the purchase of new English anthology books for high school students.

For 16 years, English teachers have been using an English anthology that does not correlate with the county's curriculum, according to Theresa Flak, assistant superintendent for instruction.

The school board on Monday night approved spending $66,775 for a new English book called "The Language of Literature."

Published by McDougal Littell, the book will be used in grades 10 and 11, Flak said.

The Washington County Board of Education approved the purchase of the first reading books for middle schools on Tuesday night.

When middle school teachers worked with students who were having reading problems, no reading series was available, said Theresa Flak, assistant superintendent for instruction.

Teachers used whatever books were available in schools to help students with reading, Flak said.

The school board agreed to spend $84,900 for two reading books titled "Choices" and "Soar to Success."
