Monday's roundup: Murk, Swacina win WACO media tournament

Sue Murk and Dave Swacina, one of three teams representing Cedar Ridge Ministries, rolled in a birdie putt on the No. 18 Monday to win the championship in the 14th annual WACO Media Tournament at Beaver Creek Country Club.

The tournament was the opening event leading to this weekend's 15th annual WACO Open championship.

Murk and Swacina fired a one-under-par 35 in the back nine leading to an even-par 72 to edge Brian Bain and Rod Sova of the Herald-Mail in a tie-breaker in one of the closest finishes in the tournament's history.

Tom Gibbons of WFRE-AM won the long drive contest and Bain win the closest to the pin contest in the 10-team, preferred-drive format tournament.

Other events scheduled for the week include the Beaver Creek qualifier for Chi-Chi's Shootout tonight at 5:30. Local golf professionals will play an 18-hole exhibition on Wednesday at 3 p.m., the 14-player Chi-Chi's Shootout at Sundown will be played on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. The new WACO Long Drive contest, opened to tournament players and amateurs will be contested on Friday at 5 p.m.

The 36-hole WACO Championship will start Saturday at 6 a.m.

Schultz second at tournament

ERIE, Pa. - Dirk Schultz, the pro at Beaver Creek Country Club, fired a 67 Monday for second place in the first round of the Greater Erie Golf Classic.

Schultz had two eagles, one when he drove the green on the par 4 No. 7 hole and dropped a 3-foot putt. He trails leader Ted Purdy, who plays on the PGA Tour, by four strokes heading into today's second and final round.

Paul Brandenburg Tournament

South Mountain 9, Brunswick 8: Danny Birchfield hit a two-run home run to lead South Mountain to the tournament championship. Jared Ferguson had two hits and Jason Brusky was the winning pitcher.

Thomas Evans Tournament

Frederick American 8, Halfway 7: Steve Hopkins and Ryan Burroughs had two hits each to lead Frederick American. Matt Petro homered for Halfway.

Halfway 11, Frederick American 4: Tim Bossler had three hits to lead Halfway to the B team championship. Matt Petro, Jared Payne and John Hose had two hits each. Frederick American Steve Hopkins three hits.

Federal 9, Sharpsburg 8: John Cawfield had three. Charles Gross, Brad Stotlemyer, Brad Wetzel and Bret Anderson added two hits apiece, while Billy Cornell homered.

Kees Memorial Tournament

Clear Spring 8, South Mountain 1: Tawnya Blair fired a three-hitter with seven strikeouts while Brandon Forrest had two hits to lead Clear Spring.

Halfway 5, American 2: Devon Vinci and Tim Bossler combined on a three-hitter with eight strikeouts, while Matt Petro added two hits as Halfway defeated American. Queilan Gantt led American with two hits.

Valley 10, Maugansville 9: Jordan Beard had two hits for Valley. Mikkel Wallech led Maugansville with three hits, while Clayton Rowland added two.

National 9, Federal 2: Winning pitcher Ryan Rall scattered nine hits with nine strikeouts and had two hits, including a home run, to lead National. Patrick Hutzler added two hits. Matt Ridenour led Federal with three hits and struck out nine batters.

Pinesburg Softball League

Pick's Place I 26, Delmar Inn 2: Mick Bowers, Tony Corbin, Alan Harsh and Glenn Himes had five hits each to lead Pick's Place I to the regular-season title. Jeff Reynolds, Rocky Wills, Bill Bakner, Lew Thomas and Steve McKimmy all hit home runs.

Pick's Place II 12, West End 11: Dewey Whitmore and Kevin Weddle had three hits each to lead Pick's Place II. Mark Scott added a home run.

J. Beasley's Reps 20, California Microwaves 11: Scott Anders and Dave Moss each went 4-for-5 to lead J. Beasley's Reps.

J. Beasley's Reps 19, J&W 11: Dave Moss went 5-for-5 and Steve Presgraves, Bill Bowers and Todd Caudell added four hits each to lead J. Beasley's Reps. Jerry Hose added three hits.

Hagerstown Church League

Christ Reformed/St. James 14, New Life 11: Eric Hahn went 4-for-5 and Brad Moore homered to lead Christ Reformed/St. James. Alan Moore, Lloyd Kelly, Jim Cooper and P.J. Everett all added three hits.

Otterbein 20, Grace 16: John Picket had four hits, including a home run, to lead Otterbein. Mike Johnston and Richard Wilson added four hits each while Rodney Baker homered.

Christ Fellowship 21, Christ Lutheran 18: Dan Nason homered and had five RBIs while Tim Thompson added four hits to lead Christ Fellowship.

Hagerstown Church of the Brethren 19, Nazarene 18: Ron Hardy and Joel Duffy both went 5-for-6 to lead Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.

Hagerstown Church of the Brethren 14, Nazarene 1: Chuck Snyder led Hagerstown Church of the Brethren with three hits, while Larry Messer added two.

Hub City Softball League

Freddie's Subs 21, Dual Highway Motors 10: Joe Hewitt had five hits while Donnie Rupp, Tod Mobley and Kevin Stumbaugh had four hits each to lead Freddie's. Todd Stocks and Kevin Ebersole each had four RBIs.

Lenox 30, Outlaws 13: Bruce Jackson had four hits, including two home runs, to lead Lenox. Mike Ward added three hits, including two home runs. Marlin Michael and Rodney Rector added four hits each.

Hub City Liquors 25, Stouffer's 22: Brian Lewis, Steve Hoover, Jeremy Gay and Darrell Walters had four hits each in Hub City Liquors' win. Scott Osborne added two home runs.
