SCOTLAND, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police were involved in a pursuit involving four motorcycles Saturday night in Greene Township, Pa., in which one rider was injured.

Zachary B. Shives, 19, of 10485 Shives Lane, Upper Strasburg, Pa., was treated and released from Chambersburg Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor.

State police said he was charged with driving on a learner's permit after dark, careless driving, having an expired inspection and driving at an unsafe speed.

The report said the chase began at 9:04 p.m. Trooper J.A. Sarver was northbound on Pa. 997 and saw four motorcycles traveling south.

Three were passing another vehicle on the right side while the fourth was passing it on the left, according to the report.

Sarver turned around and pursued the bikers, three of whom pulled into a fruit stand along the road, the report said. As he was getting out of the cruiser, the three rode off, two going south and the other north, the report said.

The report said Sarver went after the northbound biker, identified as Shives. He turned onto Byers Road, where he ran off the road and crashed, according to a report by Trooper Scott A. Leidigh.

Sarver then saw another biker, identified as Ivan J. Ehman, 19, of 10327 Upper Horse Valley Road, Upper Strasburg, going north on Pa. 997. The report said Ehman went through the intersection of Pa. 997 and U.S. 11 at high speed and then passed three vehicles in a no-passing zone near the village of Culbertson.

The report said the chase reached speeds of up to 90 mph, but Ehman pulled over at the Clearfield Road intersection.

Sarver's report identified the other two bikers as Douglas Lee Coover, 19, of 891 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa., and Josh Robert Shadle, no age given, of 5352 Cumberland Highway.
