Manna waives Pa. preliminary hearing

August 02, 1998

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- A Smithsburg, Md., man is scheduled to appear Wednesday, Sept. 2, in Franklin County Court for mandatory arraignment on charges that he tried to kill a Washington Township, Pa., man.

Ralph Manna, 60, agreed earlier this week to waive his preliminary hearing, according to District Justice Larry G. Pentz.

Franklin County District Attorney Jack Nelson would not say whether a plea agreement had been reached with Manna.

In January, Manna pleaded guilty to murder and attempted-murder charges in Frederick County, Md., and was sentenced to life in prison. He is being held in Franklin County Prison until the Pennsylvania charges are resolved.

On Jan. 6, 1997, a man broke into the home of Richard and Candace Sanchez, 10984 Gehr Road, and shot Richard Sanchez in the throat, torso and foot, according to court records.

Manna was arrested the next day in Maryland, where he also was charged with the murder of Linda Delauter, 53, of Myersville, Md., and the attempted murder of Linda Grossnickle of Wolfsville, Md.
