Applications sought for junior police academy

July 29, 1998

The Hagerstown Area Police Athletic League junior police academy is taking applications from seventh- and eighth-graders for classes that will begin Sept. 12.

The weekly sessions are on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Nov. 14. The academy is sponsored by Phoenix Color Corp.

The academy's goals are to inspire in young people a sense of community service.

Education, motivation and recognition for excellence also will be part of the program, officials said.

The academy also will present law enforcement as a potential career.

The fall semester will include talks on attitude, arrest and booking procedures, report writing and causes of juvenile crime.

For more information or to sign up, call Officer Brett McCoy at 301-739-8577, Ext. 471. Leave name, age and address on the answering machine.
