More donations needed for theme-park trip

As the date for a trip to Paramount Kings Dominion Park in Virginia nears, more funds are needed if the 140 youngsters and chaperones are to make the journey.

"We've had some individuals pledge money for a couple of youngsters and some organizations have, too, but we need more to donate," said Carolyn Brooks, HotSpots coordinator.

A group of local people is reviving a community tradition of taking busloads of Hagerstown youngsters to a major theme park.

A three-bus trip for Aug. 22 is the goal of Clara Broadus and others who are gathering community support that has helped send hundreds of children, teenagers and chaperones on similar trips in the past.

"We have set up a bank account at Hagerstown Trust Co. for contributions," said Brooks.

For the past 15 years, another community-based volunteer group collected donations from businesses and individuals to send youngsters to theme parks and amusement areas.

When that effort ended last summer, it left a void, Broadus said.

Children must be at least 10 years old to go on the trip, which will cost about $40 a person, Broadus said. It is first-come, first-served.

Anyone wishing to contribute to this summer's effort or who wants to go on the trip may call Broadus at 301-739-2557.

Contributions can be made directly to the Hagerstown Trust Co. bank account under the name For Our Kids Sake, Broadus said. The account number is 14151-8.
