New District CourthouseA model of Washington County's new District Court, to be constructed on West Antietam Street, will be shown to the Washington County Commissioners and Hagerstown City Council during a joint meeting at the County Administration Building today at 4:30 p.m.

Construction on the two-story, brick courthouse is expected to begin next spring, although a specific schedule hasn't been set, said City Planner Kathy Maher.

The building would cost just under $6 million and be built on a 29,280-square-foot lot at 36 W. Antietam St. The former Brandt Cabinet warehouse must be demolished to make way for the building.

The new District Court building will replace the one at 33 W. Washington St., which some court officials have said has quarters that are too small and lacks the facilities of modern courthouses.

Some minor design changes are being considered, Maher said. The architect might make the roof less prominent to fit in with other downtown buildings.

A small number of parking spaces behind the building would be available for the judges and staff, she said.
