Man hit by beam still in critical condition

July 28, 1998

A Smithsburg man who was struck by a falling steel beam remained in critical condition Monday night, a Washington County Hospital spokeswoman said.

Eddie Stoneberger Jr., 47, was rushed to Washington County Hospital on Saturday after the beam dropped from a crane at a demolition site.

Stoneberger, who lives next to the site, was walking by it at the time.

The site was a one-time mill and farm store of the Chewsville Cooperative Association, which was auctioned off earlier this year.

Officials from Maryland Occupational Safety and Health visited the site on Monday but did not comment on their investigation.

Victor C. Ditto, the contractor, did not return telephone calls on Monday.
