The Penn State Mont Alto campus will begin construction today of a new bridge to the entrance of campus.

The new bridge will be two lanes with a separate pedestrian bridge downstream. During construction, vehicles may access the campus via Orchard Road. The target date for completion is mid-October.

Work will be done from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.




The Jefferson County Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. today in the board office at 110 Mordington Ave. in Charles Town, W.Va.

The meeting is open to the public.




West Virginia Agriculture Commissioner Gus R. Douglass and Michael V. Dunn, assistant secretary of marketing and regulatory programs for the United States Department of Agriculture, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Inwood Farmers' Market in Inwood, W.Va.

The open house will coincide with the grand opening of the expanded indoor market to better showcase West Virginia products.

The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board will dedicate the new pool at War Memorial Park during a dinner and celebration at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the park in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Immediately after the dedication, a chicken and steak dinner will be served to benefit the pool enclosure fund. At 7 p.m., the Gary Marvel Orchestra will perform Big Band music.

The dedication ceremony and concert are free and open to the public.

Tickets for the dinner are $25 per person and can be purchased at the concession stand at the park, at the parks and recreation board office and at Union Sales Dodge on Queen Street.

Area residents who wish to take classes at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va., during the fall semester can contact the Office of Academic Support Services for registration-by-mail information. Mail-in registration is only available to those who are not currently enrolled or seeking a degree at Shepherd and who are not registered for more than seven credit hours.

The deadline for registration is Thursday, Aug. 6. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 24.

The Shepherd College Foundation has designated funds to be added to the Charles E. Doss Memorial Scholarship.

Established in 1987, the scholarship now pays $1,000 per year.

Doss served as an officer of the foundation for several years and was an honorary board member until his death earlier this year.

Donations to the scholarship may be sent to the Shepherd College Foundation, Ikenberry Hall 205, Shepherdstown, W.Va. 25443.
