Roundup: Hagerstown Ponys still perfect

July 26, 1998

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio - Matt Mastiano and Jeff Decker both went 2-for-3 with a solo home run Saturday as Hagerstown defeated Washington, Pa., 5-2 in the 13-year-old Pony League Zone Tournament.

Josh Carter got the win, scattering three hits over six innings and striking out six. Mastiano got the save, striking out one in the seventh.

Hagerstown (8-0) remained perfect in postseason play, and will play the Washington, Pa.-Long Island, N.Y. winner at noon today in the final.


River City Classic

South Mountain 8, Maugansville 4: Aaron Dixon collected four hits to lead South Mountain. Cameron Shifler and Todd Potter had two hits as South Mountain had 10 for the game. Tyler Braithwaite and Timmy Shirley had two hits each for Maugansville.


Thomas Evans Tournament

National 17, Brunswick 15: Nathan Steelman had four hits, Brian Gossard, Ryan Rau, Gary Wolfe and Danny Rowland had two hits each and Justin Marshall homered to lead National. Neil Metzgar had three hits, Palmer Curry had two hits and Greg Lowery and Trey Coates both homered for Brunswick.

Halfway 2, South Mountain 1: Ryan Bowers had two hits and Tim Bassler and Joey Richards combined for 10 strikeouts to lead Halfway.

Clear Spring 8, Maugansville 0: Rodney Swope tossed a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and had two hits to lead Clear Spring. Tyler Deneen also had three hits.

Paul Brandenberg All-Star Tournament

Halfway 13, Hancock 3: Jimmy Fiddler and Tyler Spigler each went 3-for-3, and Ryan Conner fired a two-hitter with five strikeouts to lead Halfway. Fiddler had two triples and two RBIs for the winners.

American 14, Valley 4: Jody McElroy tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and Tim Hamilton had two hits to lead American.

Brunswick 17, Maugansville 1: Ashley Love and Russell Rise combined on a three-hitter, while Kelly McDuffie, Hugh Dempster, Scott Smith and Billy Clay had two hits each and combined for eight RBIs to lead Brunswick.

South Mountain 13, Federal 2: Jason Brusky was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts and David Harman had a two-run triple to lead South Mountain.

Sharpsburg 10, Conococheague 1: Winning pitcher Brandon Churchey had 13 strikeouts, and Chris Sweiger went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Sharpsburg.


Hub City Softball

Stouffer's 12, Outlaws 11: Scott Berger had four hits and Bill Hotzman and Dave Anderson had three hits each to lead Stouffer's. Donnie Stouffer, Brian Conrad and Berger also homered for the winners.

Stouffer's 27, Hub City Liquors 26: Brian Lovins hit the game-winning double for Stouffer's. Mike Stouffer, Anderson, Joe Lowman and Ken McAllister had four hits each and Lowman and Conrad homered for the winners.

Stouffer's won six games July 18-19 in a Class D Slo-Pitch Softball Tournament in Fannettsburg, Pa., to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Tournament, Sept. 6-7 in Newville, Pa.

Tavern Softball League

Old Orchard Liquors 26, Yellow House 23: Pat Renner and Rick Lampard each had five hits to lead Old Orchard. Brady Cole and Mick Harsh added four hits apiece, and Scott Allen and Scott Kidd homered.

Delmar Inn 21, Harman's 4: Travis Furr and Daryl Willard each had five hits and six RBIs to lead Delmar Inn. Brian McLucas also had five hits for the winners.


Sloan's holding softball tourney
