Hagerstown wins title

July 20, 1998

Hagerstown won the regional Pony League tournament in Merietta, Ohio, with a 10-9 victory over Tuscarowas (Ohio). They trailed 9-2 before rallying to win the game. Aaron Davis had the game winning hit in bottom of the seventh. Matt Maspiano had two hits and Josh Carter went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer. Jeff Decker relieved Maspiano and earned the win. Hagerstown advances to the zone tournament in East Liverpool, Ohio where they will play Brooklyn, New York on Friday.

Wash. County Girls Softball

Post 202 Williamsport 7, Williamsport Redmen 6: Hanna Chambers got the save with six strikeouts, and Post 202 won the 1998 championship. Julie Gause and Jennifer Cook had two hits each for Post 202.

Emily Shirk had two hits and Shannon Smiles had seven strikeouts for Redmen.

All-Star River City Classic

Maugansville 17, National 11: Justin Weaver led Muagansville with a three-run homer. Adam Merrbaugh, Tyler Braithwaite, Scott Keeney and Cory Monroe all had two hits.


Shawn Marriner led National with three hits. Steve Munson and Ben Caffarelli each had two hits.

Halfway 10, Westend 9: Marcus Scott had three hits, including the game winner, and he was also the winning pitcher. Kody Grove had two hits including a grand slam and Tommy Wallech added two hits for Halfway.

Valley 14, Clearspring 4: Joe Acre tripled and Josh Zittle went the distance for the win for Valley. Lauran Dwier had two hits for Clearspring.

Sharpsburg 5, Hancock 4: David Brandenburg had the game-winning hit in the seventh inning for Sharpsburg. Joel Barnhart had three hits for Hancock.

Federal 18, South Mountain 10: Harrison Hammond had three hits, including a grand slam to lead Federal to victory in a winners' bracket game.

Kevin Brashears, Mark Dattilio and David Plank each had two hits for Federal.


Clearbrook Softball Tournament

Frederick Area Merchants 23, Fireworks 11: Frederick Area Merchants won the tournament by defeating Fireworks. Chad Coulter batted .750 during the tournament. Steve Sigler, Jim Mullenix, Walter Pryor all batted over .600.

Williamsport Pinesburg League

New Delmar Inn went 5-0 to win the Free State Classic Tournament. It will advance to D World Series in Sterling, Va., in September. The whole team batted over .600. Curty Myers and Goober Jones each hit .650.

Golf applications available

Applications are available for the Washington County Open golf tournament set for Aug. 8-9. They can be picked up at Beaver Creeek, Black Rock, Yingling's and the Golf Trading Post. Officials ask that golfers apply as soon as possible.
