Hay bales burn

July 15, 1998

INWOOD, W.Va. - It took firefighters about four hours Tuesday afternoon to control a hay fire at a farm on Valley View Acres Road in Inwood.

South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Company Capt. Kenny Barrett said the fire at the farm of David DeHaven was called in at about 3:15 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found about 200 round bales of hay between two barns on fire.

Barrett said front-end loaders were used to separate the bales into two fires in order to better control them. No buildings were damaged, but he said a girl was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg to be checked for smoke inhalation.

Barrett estimated the loss at about $5,000.

He said firefighters from Baker Heights, Martinsburg, Jefferson County and Clearbrook, Va., assisted at the scene. The last units left shortly after 7 p.m., he said.
