Weis Markets wants to build a 65,000-square-foot store at Dual Highway and Eastern Boulevard, an engineer told the Hagerstown Planning Commission Wednesday.
The Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies building would be torn down to make way for the store, said engineer Steve Zortich of Frederick Seibert & Associates Inc.
It would be about the same size as the Martin's Food Market at 1729 Dual Highway, he said.
The store would need entrances on both Dual Highway and Eastern Boulevard, Zoretich said.
But commission members said they don't want to see a traffic light on Eastern Boulevard because it would defeat the purpose of the highway as a bypass of downtown.
The developers will do a traffic study and submit a site plan to the commission in several months, Zoretich said.
