Rape suspect sought

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police are looking for a man who raped an employee Monday morning at the Mattress Outlet, 1502 Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg.

The police report said the attack occurred between 10 a.m. and noon at the Guilford Township business. The unidentified victim was an employee and required treatment at Chambersburg Hospital, according to the report.

Police said the suspect entered the business and engaged the employee in a conversation. While the victim was distracted, he attacked, the report said.

The report said the man made no attempt to disguise himself and "was apparently unconcerned with physical evidence at the scene."

Police did not specify whether the victim was a man or a woman.

The report described the suspect as white and between the ages of 25 and 40. The man is 6 feet or more in height, and weighs more than 200 pounds.

The report noted that the incident occurred in a store along a well-traveled road. Anyone who may have information about the attack can call state police at 1-717-264-5161.

Couple charged with sexual abuse

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg couple was charged Monday with sexual abuse of the man's son stemming from alleged sexual acts between the boy and his stepmother at his father's request, according to West Virginia State Police.

Three separate incidents occurred between December 1997 and March, when the boy was 12 and 13 years old, police alleged.

The boy's father, 35, asked his wife, the boy's stepmother, 41, to participate in sexual acts with his son while he watched, police alleged.

The woman was charged with three counts of sexual abuse by a parent and three counts of third-degree sexual assault, according to police.

The man was charged with two counts of sexual abuse by a parent and two counts of accessory to third-degree sexual assault, according to police.

Teen faces charges in tavern break-in

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - A Martinsburg, W.Va., teen was charged with breaking into the Sunnyside Tavern on Friday morning, cooking himself some food and taking a large amount of cigarettes and candy bars, according to West Virginia State Police.

The 17-year-old male broke into a side window of the business on U.S. 11, near Falling Waters, before noon and cooked himself hamburgers and onion rings before leaving with the merchandise, police alleged.

The property was recovered that night, police said.

The boy was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, petit larceny and destruction of property, police said.

Man injured when motorcycle hits deer

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Franklin County, Pa., man was hospitalized after his motorcycle struck a deer Sunday afternoon in Warren Township, Pa.

Michael Norman Pine, 34, of 8534 Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, was in serious condition Monday at Washington County Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Pennsylvania State Police said Pine was riding a 1985 Harley-Davidson Sportster south on Little Cove Road when the deer jumped in front of him at about 2:24 p.m.

Police said Pine was thrown from the bike in the collision.

Camaro stolen

HANCOCK - A 1985 Chevrolet Z28 Camaro was reported stolen Friday from Md. 615 at Hollow Road, according to Maryland State Police.

The license tag is Pa. BLZ 9631.

Woman charged in wounding of child

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg woman was charged with malicious wounding for allegedly injuring her ex-husband's child with a broken salsa jar during a fight outside a Martinsburg grocery store on Sunday, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

The incident occurred after Martinsburg City Police Det. Sgt. George Swartwood broke up a fight between Winona L. Smith, 41, of Route 5, Box 658 B, and ex-husband Daryl Smith inside the Martin's Food Market on Foxcroft Avenue, court records allege.

Seconds after Winona Smith left the store, a woman came in and told Swartwood she had thrown a bottle at a car, according to police.

Smith threw the jar of Chi-Chi's Salsa at a car belonging to Denise Brooks, who is the mother of Daryl Smith's 1-year-old son, Dylan Smith-Brooks, police alleged.

The boy was cut in the head by glass fragments that came in through the partially open window, according to police. He was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg for treatment.

The store manager claimed Winona Smith took the salsa, valued at $1.99, from the store without paying, according to police.

Winona Smith was charged with malicious wounding, obstructing an officer, disorderly conduct, petit larceny and violation of a Family Protective Order, according to magistrate court records.

Pa. troopers study 346 cases in June

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police in Franklin County, Pa., investigated 346 criminal offenses in June, according to the monthly activity report from barracks Commander Lt. Thomas L. Barkdoll.

Troopers cleared 179 cases during the month and made 192 arrests, the report said.
