Man sentenced in assault

July 02, 1998

A Funkstown man was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison with nine of those years suspended for assaulting a woman, leaving her in a pool of blood, an official said.

Wesley Morgan Armstrong on Thursday entered an Alford plea to second-degree assault in Washington County Circuit Court, said Assistant State's Attorney Gina Cirincion.

Under an Alford plea, a defendant admits the state has enough evidence to convict, but does not admit guilt.

Armstrong also was sentenced to three years of supervised probation and 100 hours of community service, Cirincion said.

The victim, a 51-year-old Funkstown woman, was taken to Washington County Hospital after the Feb. 16 assault and released shortly thereafter, hospital officials had said.
