13th Annual Salute to Independence

  • Where: Antietam National Battlefield, off Md. 65 near Sharpsburg
  • Details: Harry Ellis Dickson is guest conductor. Robert Aubry Davis from WETA/WETH will be master of ceremonies.

Maryland Army National Guard, B Battalion will provide the cannon fire during Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture."

Highlights include Edelman's "Gettysburg Suite," "George M. Cohan Medley" and "Tribute to Leroy Anderson" arranged by Bodge, and "All Aboard (A Sentimental Journey)."

The concert will conclude with Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" and a fireworks finale by Zambelli Internationale.

Admission: Free, but donations will be accepted; donations also may be sent to Maryland Symphony Orchestra, 13 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.


Shuttle bus: Washington County Commuter will provide shuttle bus service at the battlefield from Richardson Avenue at Md. 34 to the intersection of Bloody Lane and Mumma Lane, 1/4 mile from the stage area. The roundtrip cost is $1.

Hints for concertgoers: Wear outdoor clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Bring wet weather gear, lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, a picnic dinner and drinks and a flashlight. Food and beverages will be available.
