An employee of Clearview Nursing Home was charged with second-degree assault Monday evening, police said.

Allen Matthew Thompson, 41, of 50 Summit Ave., was held overnight at the Washington County Detention Center and released on personal recognizance Tuesday, according to authorities.

The victim, Pam Dupuis, told Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Routzahn that she and an employee got into an argument at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Dupuis, who is the employee's supervisor at the 9946 Downsville Pike nursing home, alleged the incident began when she told the man she was going to write him up for an undisclosed infraction, deputies said.

The man slapped her in the face, kicked a trash can that hit her leg, threw a bag at her head and then refused to leave, deputies alleged.

As Dupuis was on the telephone to 911 for help, the cord was ripped out of the phone, a heater vent damaged and a door handle broken off, deputies said.

When deputies arrived, the man was gone, but he called to apologize to Dupuis while deputies were still there.

The man was kept on the telephone until deputies could trace the call, Routzahn said. The man was taken into custody at a nearby department store.

In addition to the assault charge, Thompson was charged with destruction of property.
