Team Maryland rocked in Okla. (Friday roundup)

June 27, 1998

SEMINOLE, Okla. - Boonsboro's Justin Hamilton, the winning pitcher in Tuesday's game against Texas, started in Team Maryland's 14-4 defeat at the hands of Georgia Friday in the Sunbelt Classic.

Team Maryland led 4-2 when Hamilton left after pitching three innings. But the three pitchers who followed gave up 11 runs in the fourth.

Keith Herbert of Boonsboro went 1-for-2 and drove in a run. For the tournament, Herbert is 9-for-18 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Team Maryland was scheduled to play Arizona late Friday night.

South Hagerstown's Mike Squibb is a possible starter for Team Maryland in today's game.


Wash. Co. Senior Softball

Aladdin Award 9, Lightning Transport 8: Dee Ecton and Vanessa Shuda each had two hits and Kari Belin homered for Aladdin. Kari Mowen had two hits for Lightning.


Washington Co. Girls Softball

Antietam Paving 25, Bowman 24: Amy Henesy led Antietam Paving with four hits, while Danielle Prini, Becky Pulieri and Wilma High added two hits apiece. Danielle McKiney had a homer to lead Bowman.

Williamsport Redmen 11, First National Bank 10: Emil Shirk had three hits, including the game winning RBI, to lead Williamsport Redmen. Erin May had three hits and Sabrina Welsh and Erin Grossnickle had two hits apiece for the winners.

B.J. Greenwood had two hits for First National Bank.

Halfway Senior League

Beaver Mechanical 7, Minnick's 0: Adam Mowbray pitched a shutout to lead Beaver Mechanical over Minnick's as they finished the season with a 19-1 record and are the Halfway Sr. League champions.

Conococheague Senior League

Sheetz 5, Maugansville 0: Gene Danfelt pitched a complete game shutout and had a pair of RBIs and Charles Dodson had a pair of hits to lead Sheetz.

Senior Interleague Playoffs

Redmen 11, Jeter Paving 0: John Griffith pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts to get the win for Jeter Paving. Bucky Hilliard and Griffith led the winners with two hits apiece.

Conococheague Little League

Post 202 12, Redmen 11: Billy Palmer and Will Roney had three hits each for Post 202.

Halfway Little League

Gehr 7, Halfway Lions 3: Bingie Bingaman had three hits to lead Gehr past Halfway Lions.

Gehr 18, Redmen 5: Bingaman had four hits, including a home run, for Gehr. Nick Adenhart added three hits including a homer, while Donald Saum had two hits and also homered. Redmen's Kyle Lewis and Ben O'Brien each had two hits.

National Little League

Funkstown Legion 7, Amvets 5: Gary Wolfe had three hits, including two home runs, Darren Sweeney and Jamie Mullenix had two hits apiece, and Sweeney struck out 11 as Funkstown Legion claimed the second-half and overall championships. Marcellus Sumlin homered for Amvets.

South Mountain Little League

Post 10 15, Optimist 14: Matt Thomas had five hits and Cameron Shifler and Jeff Sink had three hits apiece to lead Post 10. Jacob Munson, Andy Brabson and Tim Kellinger had two hits apiece and Kellinger homered. Justin Irving and Aaron Castle had two hits apiece and Irving homered for Optimist.

American Little League

VFW 15, FOP 13: Alonzo Shaul had two hits to lead VFW. Jeremiah Twigg and Ben Smith had three hits each and B.J. Soto had two hits for FOP.

Elks 4, Eagles 0: Kyle Robinson was the winning pitcher to lead Elks to the Western Division championship.

Hagerstown Pony League

Troopers 11, Goodwill 5: Frankie McAllister had three hits, including a home run, Steve Heagy had two hits including a home run, while Billy Keyes picked up the win with 11 strikeouts to lead Troopers. Danny Fowler and Cody Hanes also had two hits. Scottie Rice had two hits, including a home run, and Josh Carter also homered for Goodwill.

Jeter 8, Elks 3: Zack Yinger had two hits, including a home run, Aaron Davis and Chad Purdham had two hits each, while Adam Dick picked up the win to lead Jeter. Mike Vaverchak had three hits, including a home run, and Darren Burnett had two hits, including a home run, to lead Elks.


Hagerstown Church Softball

Otterbein 22, Christ Fellowship 7: Troy Hixon had four hits, including a home run, John Pickett homered and Allen Weaver, Josh Trumpower, Nole Williams and Mike Grimm had three hits to lead Otterbein.

Gateway Ministry 17, Bethel-Chewsville 13: Jose DeJesus had four hits, including a home run, to lead Gateway Ministry. Jamie Brothers and Dale Yost added four hits, while Frank Yost and Ramon Santo had three hits and a home run each. Rusty Herman also had three hits for Gateway.
