Wednesday's roundup: Herbert leads Maryland in record style

SHAWNEE, Okla. - Keith Herbert tied tournament records for home runs and runs batted in in a game to help lead Team Maryland to a two-game sweep Wednesday in the second day of the Sunbelt Classic.

Maryland defeated Texas 15-5 via the 10-run rule and downed highly touted Florida 14-10, its first win over the southern power in four years.

Herbert starred against Florida, clubbing two three-run homers and a two-run single before coming on to get the last out and a save. The Boonsboro senior tied the record of eight RBIs set by Oklahoma's Lance Loades in 1989. The home run record is shared by 10 players.

Herbert finished 5-for-8 in the two games with three homers, a triple and 11 RBIs. He homered, tripled and drove in three runs against Texas. Herbert is 7-for-12 with 12 RBIs through the first four games of the tournament.


Boonsboro's Justin Hamilton pitched the final two innings against Texas, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.

Walkersville's Ryan Cramer started against Florida, lasting 2 2/3 innings while allowing two runs on one hit and four strikeouts.

Maryland evened its record at 2-2 after suffering a 17-1 loss to California and 16-2 defeat to Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Mike Squibb, of South Hagerstown, pitched against Oklahoma and is scheduled to face Ohio at 8:30 p.m. today.


Williamsport 13, Funkstown 4

FUNKSTOWN - Williamsport Post 211 tagged Funkstown for four home runs to claim a American Legion Western Maryland District game.

Matt Bowman hit a two-run homer in the third, Ryan Acre hit a solo shot and Brian Hammond hit a three-run shot in the fourth and Troy West hit a three-run homer in the fifth for Williamsport (12-9, 7-7 District).

Frankie Linton was 2-for-3 for Funkstown (10-11, 6-7 District).

Bowman finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, J.R. Fitzwater, Acre, West and Hammond all had two hits.


Federal Little League

Alsatia 11, Exchange 10: Will Mulieri had three hits and winning pitcher Daniel Plank added two hits, including a home run, to lead Alsatia. Trevor Hullinger had two hits, including a home run, for Exchange.

Clear Spring Little League

Cubs 11, Reds 0: Jeremy Everitts and Cody Beard combined to pitch a one-hit shutout to lead the Cubs. Everitts had two hits, including a home run, while Josh Barnhart and Brandon Yost had two hits apiece. Jessica Stine had the Reds' only hit.

Valley Little League

Chewsville 5, SMRG 1: Winning pitcher Craig Henson fired 13 strikeouts and hit a home run to lead Chewsville.

West End Little League

Coca-Cola 7, Moose 3: Jared Barnhart pitched a three-hitter to lead Coca-Cola over Moose to win the second-half championship. Cory Berger had two doubles for Moose.

American Little League

FOP 9, Thompson Concrete 3: Ben Smith had two hits and Jason Sellers homered to lead FOP.

Eagles 11, Goodwill 1: Matt Armstrong, Eddie Houser and John Brandy had two hits each to lead Eagles. Quielan Gantt had two hits for Goodwill.

Halfway Little League

Hoffman Auto 5, Gibney's 4: Tyler Jones drove in two runs to lead Hoffman. Jordan Duvall and Matt Petro had two hits and Greg Small homered for Gibney's.

South Mountain Little League

Optimists 14, Reese's 9: Josh Lewis had two hits, including a three-run homer, to lead Optimists. Aaron Castle and Kodi Bowers also had two hits each. Derek Wisner and James Hagaman each had two hits for Reese's.

Hagerstown Pony League

Goodwill 6, Firefighters 0: Nick Keller, Scotty Rice and Josh Carter combined on a three-hitter to lead Goodwill. Carter and Brandon Hendrickson each had two hits while Keller and Ryan Harsh homered.

Hagerstown Floors 13, Jeter 2: Winning pitcher John Quail pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and had two hits, including a home run, to lead Hagerstown Floors. Matt Mastiano added two hits, including a homer, and Dustin Stipes and Matt Reed had two hits. Chad Purdham homered for Jeter.

Conococheague Little League

Wolfe's 9, Byers Market 7: Dustin Bachtell combined with Troy Mills for 10 strikeouts and had two hits, including a home run, to lead Wolfe's. Nick Roberts and Mills added two hits each while Vin Vatavut had three hits.

Halfway Senior League

Carpet Gallery 10, Funkstown 8: Buddy Starner threw nine strikeouts for Carpet Gallery. Earl Wilk, Sean Gregg and Starner had two hits each. Matt Wood and Jeremy Mason had two hits apiece for Funkstown.

Hagerstown Colt League

Henson's 12-9, Goodwill 2-4: Tater Russ collected two hits, including a home run, Matt Bellon had two hits, while Derek Hoffman struck out 13 to lead Henson's in the opener. Jacob Swain had a pair of hits in game two for Goodwill.


Pinesburg Softball League

Pick's Place 25, Rep's 5: Kenny Kirby, Allen Harsh and Steve McKimmy all had five hits apiece to lead Pick's Place. Rick Grove, Rocky Wills, Glen Himes and Mick Byers Jr. all homered.
