Suns go long to win

June 21, 1998

HICKORY, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns busted a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with a pair of long home runs to defeat the Hickory Crawdads 4-1 Saturday in the South Atlantic League.

Josh Phelps led off the inning with a solo home run off Pat Daneker, his fifth of the season. After Mike Young reached on a fielder's choice, Vernon Wells crushed his eighth homer of the year.

The homers broke open a strong pitching duel between Clayton Andrews and Daneker. Daneker held the Suns (2-1) hitless through five innings, and Hagerstown scored its first run on four balls that didn't even leave the infield.

Andrews was the beneficiary of the power surge, improving his mark to 6-3. He went seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just five hits. Brian Bowles pitched the eighth, and Jaron Seabury closed the door in the ninth for his 11th save.
