Hearing postponed in attempted murder

June 12, 1998

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The preliminary hearing for a Maryland man charged in the attempted murder of a Washington Township man was postponed this week.

No new date was set for the hearing for Ralph Manna, 59, of Smithsburg, Md. He faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and burglary, according to Franklin County District Justice Larry Pentz's office.

Manna is serving a life sentence for a murder conviction in Frederick County, Md.

The Franklin County District Attorney's Office said Manna's attorney requested the postponement earlier in the week. Manna was been scheduled for a hearing Thursday on charges he tried to kill Richard Sanchez, of 10984 Gehr Road, Waynesboro, on Jan. 6, 1997.

Sanchez and his wife, Candace, were sitting on a sofa in their basement when a man smashed the sliding glass door and shot Richard Sanchez in the throat, torso and foot, according to court records.

Manna pleaded guilty in January to first-degree murder in the shooting death of Linda Delauter, 53, of Myersville, Md. He also pleaded guilty to attempted murder and a handgun violation in an attack on Linda Grossnickle, 45, of Wolfsville, Md.

The murder of Delauter and attack on Grossnickle also occurred on Jan. 6, 1997, according to court records. Maryland State Police arrested Manna the next day.
