Laura Spessard, a 14-year-old eighth-grader at Northern Middle School, was named Washington County Youth of the Month Tuesday by the Washington County Commissioners.

Principal Richard E. Gehrman Jr. nominated her for the award, calling her an "exemplary leader" in the school.

Spessard is the secretary of the student council and a member of the distinguished honor roll.

She is one of 12 students in her grade selected to the peer mediation team, which helps students resolve conflicts without violence.

She is president of the Computer Club.

Spessard, who plays the clarinet, is a member of the Northern Middle School Marching Band and was selected to represent the school at the All-County Band competition.

She is the captain of her soccer team, runs cross country and track and is a member of the YMCA swim team.

She also is an active member of the youth group at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

Her parents are Gerald and Karen Spessard.

She said she wants to attend college and graduate school but hasn't picked out a profession yet.

County Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook wished her luck.

As a recipient of the Youth of the Month award, she will receive a $50 savings bond courtesy of Al Martin, C.P.A.
