Business leaders vow to back downtown revitalization

June 11, 1998

Hagerstown business leaders told the mayor and City Council Tuesday they will continue a cooperative effort to revitalize the downtown area.

Business leaders have formed a steering committee with smaller groups focusing on the arts and entertainment district in the first block of South Potomac Street, funding for a design, and funding for construction.

The group will look for land available for redevelopment, either as businesses or parking lots to support nearby businesses, business leaders said during Tuesday's council work session.

"We're a bunch of capitalists. We don't believe in vacant buildings that don't carry their own weight," said Merle Elliott with the Hagerstown-Washington County Industrial Foundation.

The group also includes members of the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Hagerstown Committee.
