Miss Maryland hopefuls arrive in town Monday

Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken from South Carolina will host the 63rd annual Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant Thursday, June 18, Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20, at The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown. This will mark the 27th anniversary that Hagerstown has been the host city for the annual preliminary to the Miss America Scholarship Program.

The 22 Miss Maryland contestants arrive in Hagerstown Monday, June 15, for a week of public appearances, rehearsals and competitions. The week will kickoff with opening ceremonies beginning at noon in the center court of Valley Mall on Halfway Boulevard off exit 5 of Interstate 81. Miss Maryland Jaime Fox, the 22 contestants for 1998, as well as local and regional dignitaries will be on hand.

The theme for this year's production will be "There's No Stopping Us" featuring Fox, the contestants, the Miss Maryland Dancers and former Miss Marylands. Preliminary competitions get under way Thursday and Friday evenings beginning at 8 p.m. The finals will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday evening with the announcement of the top 10 semi-finalists. The top 10 will continue in competition with the field being narrowed to the top five, who will participate in an onstage interview. From there the new Miss Maryland will be selected. She will represent Maryland in the nationally televised Miss America Pageant in September in Atlantic City, N.J.

The Miss Maryland contestants will participate in a private interview with a panel of judges during the week and that score will count 30 percent. Talent will count for 40 percent. Evening wear will count 15 percent. Physical fitness in swimsuit will count 15 percent. Contestants also are required to have a platform of an issue that is important to them.

More than $2.6 million in cash scholarships and in-kind awards will be presented Saturday evening.

Tickets for the 63rd annual Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant are available by calling the Maryland Theatre Box Office at 301-790-2000. The cost is $10 for Thursday, $15 for Friday and $25 for Saturday. There is a $1 service charge per ticket.
