Wreck claims life of Waynesboro man

YORK, Pa. - A Franklin County, Pa., man was killed early Monday in a fiery one-vehicle crash in Hellam Township, York County, Pa.

Michael A. Baumgardner, 20, of 8076 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 12:35 a.m., according to a report from the Hellam Township Police Department.

The driver of the car, Eric Senft, 29, of York, was listed in stable condition at York Memorial Hospital Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor. An-other passenger, Frank Sweitzer, 28, also of York, was in satisfactory condition at the hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

The accident was reported at 12:11 a.m. on Furnace Road, the police report said. The car ran off the road, struck a tree and caught on fire, the report said.

When police arrived, the 1992 Volkswagen Jetta was on fire in the middle of the road. Senft and Sweitzer were able to get out of the car, but Baumgardner was trapped in the back seat, according to the report.

Baumgardner was a 1996 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School. He was attending the Bradley Academy of Arts in York, according to Grove Funeral Home in Waynesboro.
