Teens drown in Frederick

June 07, 1998

FREDERICK, Md. - Two Frederick teens drowned Sunday while they were swimming with friends in the Linganore Lake between Frederick and Mount Airy, Md., according to a report by the Frederick County Sheriff's Department.

The bodies of Shawn Ewing, 16, and John R. Rippeon Jr., 13, both of the 7100 block of Linganore Road, were pulled from the lake about 15 yards from shore by a dive team from the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company, the report said.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the lake at about 4:50 p.m. for a report of two possible drownings, the report said.

Several area juveniles were swimming in the lake near the dam when Ewing and Rippeon apparently became distressed and could not make it back to the shore, the report said.

The youths had been swimming in the lake for several hours, the report said.

Two of the juveniles attempted to rescue the other two, but were not successful, the report said. They swam back to shore, where they ran to call 911, the report said.
