Saturday's roundup - Williamsport, Brunswick split doubleheader

WILLIAMSPORT - Brunswick Post 96 took advantage of eight walks and eight Williamsport errors to defeat Post 202 5-4 in game one of a Western Maryland District American Legion doubleheader on Saturday.

Jake Backover had two hits to lead Brunswick. Williamsport's Brian Hammond hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Matt Bowman led Post 202 with three hits and J.R. Fitzwater added two.

In the second game, Williamsport's Isaac Henry (2-0) struck out eight, walked one and allowed one run in a 6-1 win. Hammond and Derek Brown each had a run-scoring double for Williamsport. Josh Lucas led Brunswick with two hits.


Clear Spring Minor League

Pirates 11, Orioles 10: Jeremy McMullan, Heather Higgins and Ethan Shives had two hits each for the Pirates. Nathan Mills had three hits, including a home run, for the Orioles.


Astros 14, Yankees 6: Cody McCarthy had three hits, including a home run, and Aaron Mills and Justin McIntyre added three hits to lead the Astros. McCarty and Mills combined for 17 strikeouts. Ronald Carr had a pair of hits for the Yankees.

Valley Little League

SMRG 10-12, Dorsey Bros. 0-3: Josh Tracey and Miles Chan collected two hits apiece, while Drew Crawford and Andrew Bentley combined on a one-hitter to lead SMRG in game one. Matt Morin had three hits, while Crawford and Dustin Aaron had two hits apiece for SMRG. David Barnhart had two hits for Dorsey Bros. in the second game.

Smithsburg Little Sluggers

Cavetown Planing 14, Scott's Speed Shop 13: Matthew Shriver was 4-for-4 and Andrew Smith had a three-run triple to lead Cavetown Planing. Logan Miss homered and doubled and Kirk Liever had three hits for Scott's Speed Shop.

Homestyle Laundry 15, Mace Auto 3: Andrew Bohan and Scott Miller combined on a one-hitter for Homestyle Laundry. Miller, Josh Baker, Blake Nalley and Alex Bradburn led Homestyle with two hits each.

National Little League

AMVETS 7, Funkstown Legion 4: Dave Peacher earned the win with 10 strikeouts for AMVETS. Bryan Appel and Adam Dieterich had two hits each. Jamie Mullenix had two hits, including a home run, for Funkstown Legion.

Blue Gray Towing 7, Hartles 6: Chris Barnhart and Matt Cronise each had two hits for Blue Gray.

Washington Co. Girls Softball

Orndorff Plumbing & Heating 15, Four Star 0: Brittany Biser, Calli Shank and Kari McKarney had three hits each for Orndorff. Chelsey Hershey had nine strikeouts.

Williamsport Redmen 9, Clear Spring Lightning 2: Shannon Smiles pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts and had two hits to lead Redmen. Sabrina Welsh had three hits, including a homer, and five RBIs and Jennifer Toms had two hits for the winners. Jocelyn Price had six strikeouts in a losing effort.

Building Blocks 17, First National 2: Lindsey Poffenberger had two hits to lead Building Blocks. Jamie Fowler homered for First National.

Sharpsburg Little League

Amercian Trust Bank 9, SAL 8: Luke Hintze had four hits and Derek Crist added three to lead American Trust Bank. Charles Gross and Kevin Sandell had two hits each. Wesley Collins had two hits for SAL.

Hagerstown Pony League

Troopers 10, Firefighters 4: Billy Keyes pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with a solo homer to lead Troopers. Mike Thomas was 3-for-3, including two doubles, and Dan Fowler added a grand slam for the winners. Gary Naile had a solo homer and Josh Norris was 2-for-3 for Firefighters.

Eagles 17, Elks 5: Winning pitcher Matt Johnson had eight strikeouts and was 3-for-4, including a three-run homer, to lead the Eagles. Mike Rodgers was also 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, while Mike Campbell added three hits. Jeremy Leazier and Jeff Decker each had two hits for the winners, while Chris Sklencar had a solo home run. Jesse Hoffman had two hits to lead Elks.

Conococheague Little League

Post 202 11, Taylor Trucking 1: Winning pitcher Will Roney threw a one-hitter and had three hits to lead Post 202.

Hancock Little League

Astros 8, Tigers 7: Aaron Wilt had three hits and Aime Barton, Andy Morris and Joe Divelbliss had two each to lead the Astros. Jeremy Newton had two hits and struck out nine for the Tigers.

A's 10, Pirates 4: Byron Younker had 14 strikeouts and hit a three-run home run to lead the A's. Kenny Clark had a two-run triple for the Pirates.

Hagerstown Colt League

Henson 9, UAW 7: Matt Hood had three hits, including the game-winning home run in the 11th inning, to lead Henson. Winning pitcher Derek Hoffman had 12 strikeouts and Tater Russ added three hits. Mike Dellinger, Andrew Jerome, Walter Drill and Rocky DiCola each had two hits for the winners. Matt Belin had four hits, while Mark Lipella, Mark Koontz, Brian Tingle and Paul Fisher each had two hits for UAW.

Barton 6, VFW 5: Jeff Pheil doubled in the winning run to lead Barton. Chris Trolio and Steve Heefner each had two hits and Heefner struck out nine. Ricky Myers had three hits and Bobby Ord added two for VFW.
