Pa. man drowns in creek

June 06, 1998

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A 78-year-old McConnellsburg-area man drowned Thursday after he slipped and fell into a shallow creek about a half-mile south of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said.

A fisherman found the body of Charles H. Kendall face down in the creek about 9:30 a.m., said Trooper Bruce Campbell.

Fulton County Coroner Dennis Buterbaugh pronounced Kendall dead at the scene and estimated the time of death at between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., Campbell said.

Police believe Kendall accidentally slipped into the knee-high creek. He was wearing bedroom slippers with no tread, but was dressed in day clothes, Campbell said.

There was no sign that he hit his head, although an autopsy was being performed to determine for sure, Campbell said.

Kendall lived near McConnellsburg on Pa. 16 and was married to Gladys Kendall, Campbell said.
