Friday's roundup - HJC's Fuss ends on high note

LANSING, Mich. - Two runners made the most of their last competition on the Hagerstown Junior College track team.

Angie Fuss finished seventh in the women's race and Brian Sellers was 12th in the men's at the 25th Annual NJCAA Marathon Championships on Friday.

Fuss, a three-time All-American at HJC, completed the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 29 minutes, 2 seconds, setting a school record in her first marathon attempt.

Kelly Cunningham of Vincennes (Ind.) University was first in 3:13:39.

Sellers completed his run in 2:53:53, while teammate Shawn Cutsail was 22nd (3:15:49) in his first marathon.

Steve Jones of Danville (Ill.) Area Community College finished first in 2:32:02.


Halfway Little League

Gibney's 6, Hoffman 5: Jared Payne had two hits to lead Gibney's. Timmy Bosler and Brian Everitts each had two hits for Hoffman.


Federal Little League

Exchange 24, Rotary 9: Trevor Hullinger had four hits, while Nick Mellot and Kevin Brashears had three apiece for Exchange. Eric Harbaugh had two hits, including a home run, for the winners. Dennis Muse and Steven Zerance had two hits apiece for Rotary.

American Little League

VFW 12, Funkstown Legion 4: Alonzo Shaul and Matt Smith had two hits each, while Ryan Brady pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for VFW.

Conococheague Little League

Byers' Market 7, Wolfe's 3: Greg Brechbill and Jonathan Widmyer each had two RBIs and Aaron Buchman pitched a three-hitter to lead Byers' Market.

National Little League

FOP 19, Hartles 13: Eric McPherson had a home run and a triple to lead FOP. Ryan Rau had two doubles and a triple for Hartles.

Hancock Little League

Astros 13, Yankees 5: Chris Foxx scattered five hits to lead the Astros. Tyler Younker had two hits for the Yankees.

Valley Little League

Rocky's 4, Chewsville Lions 1: T.J. Bowser pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Rocky's. Josh Mitchell and Craig Henson combined for 11 strikeouts for Chewsville Lions.

South Mountain Little League

Post 10 10, Optimist 8: Timmy Kellinger had three hits, including a home run, and Josh Lum added three hits for Post 10. Jacob Munson, Jeremy Fulks and Jeff Sink had two hits each for the winners. Justin Irving had two hits for Optimist.

Maugansville Little League

Burkholder's 7, Executone 6: J.D. Cline had four hits and drove in the game-winning run for Burkholder's. Jarad Zampelli had two hits for Burkholder's.

West End Minor League

Callas 9, Hiser 8: Corey Walzl had two hits for Callas. Charles Green and Brian Kridler had two hits for Hiser.

Hagerstown Pony League

Jeter 10, UAW 0: Aaron Davis collected three hits and Brad Talbert homered to lead Jeter.

Goodwill 5, F&M 3: Scottie Rice and Nick Keller had two hits apiece, while Josh Carter pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Goodwill. Keith Kellinger homered for F&M.

South County Big League

South County 6, Clear Spring 5: J.D. Smith had a home run and a double and Clint Pereschuk had two hits for South County.

Interleague Senior League

Jeter Paving 15, Wilson Ruritan 5: Gary Bloyer had three hits, Matt Kibler and Eric Martin each had two hits and John Bussard homered to lead Jeter Paving. Greg Yeakle, Nathaniel Hirsch and Clinton Faith had two hits apiece for Wilson Ruritan.

Maugansville Senior League

Penn Avenue Meats 9, Pugh's 6: Dwayne Jamison had a two-run double and Brian Lantz had an RBI single for Penn Avenue Meats. Milton Stamper had two hits for Pugh's.

Auto Center 7, Conococheague Sheetz 5: Barry Smoot and Mark Durboraw each had two hits and Matt Dorsey struck out nine for Auto Center. Charles Dodson homered, and Heath Troncotti had two hits, including a homer, for Sheetz.

Washington County Girls Softball

Conomac Lions 17, Manpower 1: Stacey Cannon, Bridget Schnur and Tiffany Palmer each had two hits for Conomac. Palmer also homered. Shauntay Henderson had two hits for Manpower.


Hagerstown Church League

Christ Reformed/St. James Brethren 39, Christ Lutheran 6: Jim Cooper hit two home runs and Matt Shannon and Matt Banzhoff each hit one to lead Christ Reformed. P.J. Everett, Rodney Burgan and Robbie Zarobinski had four hits each for the winners. Allen Strasburg was 3-for-3 for Christ Lutheran.

Hagerstown Church of the Brethren 15, Christ Fellowship 11: Ron Hardy and Joel Duffy collected five hits apiece for Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. Chris Barb and Dan Nason each went 4-for-4 for Christ Fellowship.

Tri-State Fellowship 37, Gateway Ministries 13: Smiley Jackson homered, Rich Hayes, Pork Wallech and Arland Horst had five hits each and Todd Streett and Mike Kelbaugh had four hits each to lead Tri-State Fellowship.

Maranatha/Virginia Ave. Church of God 20, New Life 8: Jason Gladhill had six hits and Cliff Miles and Brian Smith added four each to lead Maranatha.

Otterbein 25, St. Mark's 13: John Pickett had five hits, including two home runs, while Josh Trumpower and Alan Weaver added four hits each to lead Otterbein.
