Greencastle man faces theft charge

June 05, 1998

A Greencastle, Pa., man wanted by Maryland State Police in connection with the theft of a $1,700 scale from Jefferson Cheese in Hancock last month was picked up Monday.

Released on personal recognizance, Steven Lynn Beaver, 20, is facing one charge of felony theft, according to records at Washington County District Court.

The maximum penalty for a conviction on a felony theft charge is 15 years in prison.

The Fisher Model XL-410 gram balance scale was taken from the laboratory, according to court records.

Beaver, who reportedly was fired from his job at the cheese plant in April, had returned to the business at 14738 Warfordsburg Road on several occasions to socialize with employees during their breaks, court records said.

Several employees said that Beaver had expressed an interest in the scale while he was still employed with Jefferson Cheese, court records said.
