Maugans Avenue to get Taco Bell

June 03, 1998

A new Taco Bell should be up and running in the next three or four months on Maugans Avenue at the Interstate 81 interchange.

The Washington County Planning Commission on Monday night unanimously approved the site plan for the fast-food restaurant, although residents of the Orchard Hills subdivision expressed concerns about continued development in the area.

The restaurant will be owned by Burgerbusters Inc., which also owns the Taco Bell restaurants on Dual Highway and Wesel Boulevard.

Al Martin, an Orchard Hills resident and finance director for the City of Hagerstown, said residents want the woods bordering homes in Orchard Hills to be maintained as a buffer against development.

Asad Ghattas, who owns 50 acres abutting Orchard Hills and Maugans Avenue, said he would have no problem providing double the required 25 feet of buffer for the residents.

Planning Commission Chairman Bert Iseminger said that traffic along Maugans Avenue will be considered in plans for future development, and said the Washington County Commissioners need to consider upgrading the road.
