Saturday's roundup: Post 202 swept in opener

WILLIAMSPORT - Sometimes lightning can strike twice in the same place.

Just ask Scott Jennings, whose Williamsport Post 202 team dropped both games of its Western Maryland District American Legion baseball doubleheader to Mt. Airy Gold Star Post 191 by identical 6-4 scores on Saturday.

"It was a poor exhibition of baseball on our part," Jennings said. "We really didn't do anything well today. You can't afford to lose a doubleheader at home and be competitive in this league."

Williamsport (0-2) left 18 runners on base in the doubleheader.

"I am very pleased," Mt. Airy manager George Richardson said. "Our kids played very well. Our kids really stepped up today and did an outstanding job. I think that the district is going to be strong this year. I don't see a dominating team and I don't see a patsy."

In the first game, Mt. Airy (2-1) was leading 2-1 when it scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Pete D'Amour and Kevin Damiano each had an RBI single and two runs scored on an error.

D.D. Barrett had three hits and two RBIs, while Ryan Acre and J.R. Fitzwater added two hits each for Williamsport.

In the second game, Mt. Airy came back from a 3-1 deficit by scoring four runs in the fifth to go up 5-3.

Fitzwater had two hits.

"Offensively, we're really struggling right now," Jennings added. "We can't get anybody to step up and get the big hit. We have got to get things turned around pretty quick before we dig ourselves too big of a hole."
