Voter turnout low in municipal election

May 29, 1998

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Voter turnout was low Thursday for the Charles Town municipal election.

Only 55 ballots from a possible 1,260 registered voters in Charles Town were cast for the five unopposed candidates, according to City Clerk Brenda Hamilton.

In the 1997 municipal election, 200 voters came out, compared to 523 in 1996, Hamilton said.

A total of 48 votes were cast for Mayor J. Randolph Hilton, who will enter his second term as mayor.

Hilton got into town politics in 1986 when he was chosen to finish the final year of a term vacated when a council member died. He was elected to the Town Council in 1995 and won his first mayoral race by defeating Rufus Park in 1996.
