May 29, 1998

EMMITSBURG, Md. - An 11-year-old girl who was struck in the head by an object believed to have been shot out from under a lawn mower died Wednesday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Tiffany Greene, 11, of Baltimore, was injured Monday evening while helping her mother and two others work on the grass at the parking lot of the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes at Mount St. Mary's College, said Frank Buhrman, public relations director at the college.

The group was working on a strip of grass at about 6:25 p.m. between the parking lot and the grotto road when the girl was hit.

Her mother removed the object from her head and she was flown to Johns Hopkins by Maryland State Police helicopter.

Greene died in intensive care around 3 p.m. Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Buhrman said the object wasn't a pitchfork as was previously thought, but may have been a piece of metal about the size of a pitchfork tine.
