Charles Town elections today

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Charles Town voters will be picking from a slate of unopposed candidates in today's municipal election.

The polls at City Hall will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., said City Clerk Brenda Hamilton.

With no contested races, Hamilton said she expects voter turnout to be low.

J. Randolph Hilton is seeking a second term as mayor. He first got into town politics when he was chosen to finish the final year of a term vacated when a council member died in 1986. He was elected to the Town Council in 1995 and won his first mayoral race by defeating Rufus Park in 1996.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* " NATURALSIZEFLAG="0" ALIGN="BOTTOM"> Ward 1: Violet Lowery. She is running to replace Councilwoman Sondi Fleming, who chose not to seek re-election.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* " NATURALSIZEFLAG="0" ALIGN="BOTTOM"> Ward 2: Timothy Robinson. He was appointed to the council in 1993 to fill a vacancy created by a councilman's death. Robinson won elections in 1994 and 1996.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* " NATURALSIZEFLAG="0" ALIGN="BOTTOM"> Ward 4: Geraldine Willingham. She was elected to the council in 1986 and has served ever since.

Although one council member is selected from each ward, the candidates are voted on by residents from throughout Charles Town.
