Martinsburg advances to state semis

EAST FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Martinsburg scored twice in the top of the seventh and held on for a 6-5 win over East Fairmont in the West Virginia Region II Championship on Saturday.

Jennifer Leonard, Mara Kafton and Stephanie Scales had consecutive singles to break a 4-4 tie.

East Fairmont (17-7) scored in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 6-5, then had runners at the corners with one out. But Lauren Scales caught a line drive and doubled up the runner off first to end the game.

Leonard, Stephanie Scales and Erica Swartz each went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs (10-10), who have won six straight. Scales also had two RBIs.



Moler wins title at No. 3 singles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Jefferson girls tennis team took third place, while the boys tied for fifth in the West Virginia State Tournament Championships this weekend.

Stefanie Moler won the No. 3 singles state title, defeating Ashely Ftaats of Parkersburg South, 7-5, 6-2.

Jennifer Brosh was second at No. 4 singles. She lost in the finals to Shirley Duthie of Cabell Midland, 6-1, 6-1.

Brosh teamed with Julie Lipscomb for second at No. 3 doubles.


Funkstown 13, Middletown (Pa.) 1

DALLASTOWN, Pa. - Shane Carbaugh and Matt Jenkins each drove in three runs to lead Funkstown Post 211 to a win over Middletown (Pa.) in an American Legion exhibition game.

Jenkins, Dustin French and Chris Purnell each had two hits for the winners. Zack Swisher allowed four hits and struck out five in five innings.

St. Mary's 2, Williamsport 1

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Kevin Burch struck out 14 batters for St. Mary's. Matt Bowman had three hits for Williamsport.

Williamsport 9, Gaithersburg 0

J.R. Fitzwater pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for Post 202. Matt Bowman had two hits, Jon Kerns had three RBIs and Joe Barton hit a two-run home run for Williamsport.


Blue 6, White 4

SMITHSBURG - Catoctin's Mike Gehman had two goals and Smithsburg's Evan Hunt had eight saves for White in the Western Maryland Conference All-Star Game. Hagerstown's Dustin Higdon had six saves for Blue.


Hagerstown Pony League

Hag. Floors 11, Firefighters 10: John Quail had two hits, including a home run, and Matt Reed added two hits for Hagerstown Floors. Gary Naile had three hits, two of them homers, and Shawn Ryan had two hits for Firefighters.

Eagles 16, Jeter 6: Mike Rodgers had four hits, three of them homers, and 11 RBIs to lead Eagles. Matt Johnson and Zach Stowell had two hits, including a homer for each. Aaron Davis homered for Jeter.

Tavern Softball League

South End 17, Harman's 13: Donnie Gipe, David Dean and Greg Petty Jr. had three hits each for South End.

Delmar Inn 21, Yellow House 4: Darrell Willard and Tony Robinson went 5-for-5 for Delmar.

Halfway Senior League

Beaver Mechanical 14, Elks 6: Jake Marquis struck out 15 and had two hits, including a homer, to lead Beaver. Josh Smith, Brent Hoover, Adam Mowbray, Mike Ridgely, Matt Melby and Kevin Shank all had two hits for Beaver. Gary Combs had two hits for Elks.

Carpet Gallery 16, Minnich's 3: Buddy Starner and Walter Drill combined to pitch a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Carpet Gallery. Drill also had three hits and Starner also had two hits for the winners.

Halfway Little League

Gibney's 4, Gehr 3: Greg Small struck out 12 and had two hits, including a home run, for Gibney's. Wes Macintosh, Nick Adenhart and Jimmy Sutch had two hits each for Gehr.

Valley Storage Bin 14, Hoffman Auto 3: Daniel Lynn and David Warrenfeltz combined for 14 strikeouts to lead Valley. Marcus Scott and Chris Martin had three hits and Jesse Boggs, Joey Maas, Matt Henneberger and Lynn had two hits. Dustin Mitchell had two hits for Hoffman.

Lions 26, Redmen 2: John Hose had four hits and Ryan Bowers, Michael Larkin, Steve Nunnaly, Steve Ticone and Ronnie May each added three for Lions.

Conococheague Little League

Redmen 15, Wolfe's 2: Andy Taylor threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Brad Farris had four hits for Redmen. Tyler Beard and John Coombs had two hits for Redmen.

Washington County Girls Softball

Boonsboro Troopers 38, Boonsboro Produce 9: Rhea Bradford had three hits to lead Troopers. Jenny Primeaux had two hits, including a homer, and Annie Stup had two doubles for Troopers.

West End Little League

Moose 4, VFW 1: Winning pitcher Willie Branch had two hits, including a home run, for Moose.

American Little League

VFW 5, Thompson Concrete 4: Ryan Brady had two hits and Mark Snyder got the win for VFW. Billy Spence had two hits for Thompson.
