Lions derailed for 2A title

May 23, 1998

SEVERN, Md. - All season long, the Walkersville softball team used its 1-2 pitching punch of Amanda Zentner and Amy Burdette to blitz the competition.

On Friday, the Lions got a taste of their own medicine.

McDonough scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and put the game in the hands of Clarisa Crowell, who scattered five hits to lead the Rams to a 2-0 win over Walkersville in the Class 2A State Final at Randazzo Softball Park.

The win clinched a fourth straight state championship for McDonough (23-3) and spoiled a chance at a perfect season for Walkersville (22-1).

Zentner slammed the door after the first inning, holding the Rams to just seven hits.

The Lions threatened in the top of the seventh but came up empty. Valerie Bowers singled and Burdette reached on an error. Bowers was forced out at third on a grounder by Anne Parsons. Traci Snider flied out to left and Zentner lined out to end the game.
