Williamsport duo ousted (Local roundup)

May 23, 1998

BALTIMORE - The Williamsport doubles team of Abby Creek and Amy Spoonire lost Friday morning in the first round of the Maryland State Tennis Tournament, 6-4, 6-3 to the No. 4 seeded team from Montgomery Blair.

Creek and Spoonire took a 4-3 lead in the first set, then dropped eight straight games to fall behind 0-5 in the second. The Wildcat duo reeled off three straight games before losing the match.

"They just couldn't come up with the crucial points," Williamsport head coach Charlotte Trout said. "But they were really competitive, and I don't think they are too disappointed."

Creek, a senior, and Spoonire, a junior, finished the season 7-2 after teaming up at the end of the season to win the Washington County championship and take second in the District One tournament.

Hunt joins teammate at SLU

Andre Hunt, Hagerstown Junior College's record-setting jump specialist, has signed a full scholarship to compete for Southeastern Louisiana Univiersity in track and field next spring.

Hunt became the second HJC athlete to sign with the Division I school located in Hammond, La. Duriel Mason announced his decision to attend Southeastern Louisiana on Monday.

Hunt chose SLU over Georgia, Marshall and Eastern Kentucky. Tom Douple, HJC's first-ever track all-American, is the athletic director at Southeastern Louisana.

The Lynchburg, Va., native earned All-American status in 1997 in the triple jump during the national indoor meet. He set an HJC record of 49 feet, 4 3/4 inches, the longest indoor or outdoor jump in school history. He broke his own record with the leap, but his earlier jump of 49-3 broke a 20-year-old record.
