New noise rules go into effect Friday

May 21, 1998

Car stereos will no longer be excluded from Hagerstown's noise law starting Friday, said Hagerstown City Police Capt. Robert Hart.

City Council members voted in April to amend the law so car stereos and sound equipment and musical instruments in vehicles are no longer exempt.

Hart said it will be up to the officer's discretion whether violators of the law receive a warning or citation.

Under the law, it is illegal for anyone to play music or make other noise that is unreasonably loud within 50 feet of any dwelling, business or residence. The ordinance is in effect 24 hours a day.

City officials are considering whether to remove the possibility of jail time as a penalty, Hart said. The maximum penalty is 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
