Remembering those who served

Following is a list of Tri-State area Memorial Day observances:

Memorial Day parade

Where - Main Street from Sharpsburg Elementary School to Antietam National Cemetery, Sharpsburg

When - Saturday, May 23


Activities in the town square include the dedication of the town clock at 10:45 a.m., music by Rohrersville Band at 11:15 a.m. and a wreath-laying ceremony at noon. Retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Philip Coady, first commander of USS Antietam, is grand marshal. The parade, with 90 marching units, begins at 1:45 p.m. Immediately following the parade, there will be a ceremony at Antietam National Cemetery.

Civil War music

Where - Dunker Church, Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg

When - Saturday, May 23, 9:30 and 11 a.m., 4 and 6 p.m.; Sunday, May 24, 10:30 a.m., 12:45, 2:45 and 4 p.m.


Cost - Entrance fees to the park are $2 for adults, $4 per family. Children younger than 16 are admitted free.

Programs will include demonstration and discussion of instruments used during the Civil War and musical programs featuring Civil War songs. Call 301-432-5124.

Morris Frock Post 42 events

Where - Washington County Courthouse, Hagerstown

When - Sunday, May 24, 1:45 p.m.


A concert by Hagerstown Municipal Band precedes the 2 p.m. ceremony, which features Robert L. Everhart, American Legion Western Maryland District Commander, as speaker. There also will be a laying of wreaths and comments from the Morris Frock Post 42 commander.

Community memorial service

Where - Harbaugh Church, Harbaugh Church Road, Waynesboro, Pa.

When - Sunday, May 24, 1:30 p.m.


Patriotic music by Wayne Band, under the direction of Asher S. Edelman Jr., will precede the Memorial ceremonies. In addition, there will be a performance by the USMC Color Guard from Camp David. Call 1-717-762-1747.

Memorial Day program

Where - War Memorial Park, Tennessee Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va.

When - Monday, May 25, 10 a.m.

Cost - $5 advance, $6 day of the event for luncheon.

There will be a formal program followed by a roast beef luncheon and yard sale. Call 1-304-264-4842.

Rose Hill celebration

Where -Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown

When -Monday, May 25, 10 a.m.


Ray Linebaugh, president of the Joint Veterans Council, will speak at the Confederate cemetery site.

Rest Haven performances

Where -Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown

When -Monday, May 25, 11 a.m.


There will be a Civil War reading, performances of "Amazing Grace" and "Echo Taps" and a concert by Appalachian Wind Quintet.

Clear Spring events

Where -Little Rose Hill Cemetery on U.S. 40 east of Clear Spring

When -Sunday, May 24, noon


Members of the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 in Clear Spring will be laying a wreath on Herbert's grave site. Herbert died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
