DeStefano will go to Shepherd

May 21, 1998

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Toni DeStefano came to Hagerstown Junior College with the reputation of being a winner.

It resulted in more than 40 wins for the Lady Hawks over the last two seasons. Now it's a marketing plan that Shepherd College would like to employ.

Shepherd women's basketball coach Betsy Blose announced that she has signed DeStefano to a letter-of-intent to play for the Lady Rams, becoming one of nine of the school's new recruits.

DeStefano, of Tyrone, Pa., brings outstanding ball handling skills and strong shooting to Shepherd. The 5-foot-4 DeStafano, who played on a national AAU champion, can play both point guard and shooting guard, averaging more than 15 points per game.

"Toni will give us more experience and depth at the point guard slot," Blose said. "She had a very successful career at HJC, leading them to 20-plus wins in both years."

Blose also signed Makia Staves, a 5-foot-9 forward from Bishop McNamara. She averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds as a senior, leading her to more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her high school career.

Shepherd's nine new signees will join the five remaining players from the Lady Rams' 16-12 season.

"We are looking forward to next season," Blose said. "We will be a new team and young, but with a lot of potential."
