JEFFERSON, Md. - Valley Elementary School in Jefferson was selected to participate in international Space Day on Thursday.

Created and organized by Lockheed Martin with support of NASA and the cooperation of dozens of educational and space advocacy groups, Space Day celebrates achievements in space exploration and looks ahead to future space challenges.

This year's theme is "Student Signatures in Space."

NASA astronaut Bryan D. O'Connor will kick off the day's events at 9:15 a.m. at the school with a 45-minute presentation about his NASA experiences. The rest of the morning will be dedicated to space education.

A picnic will be shared at noon.

At 1:30 p.m., students will sign a poster that will accompany John Glenn on NASA's October space shuttle mission.

Students from Opequon Elementary School in Martinsburg, W.Va., will also sign a poster that will accompany the shuttle crew.
