No one likes being shut out.

So when the Washington County Tennis Championships had gone through three finals on Saturday and no Blazers were represented, there was a little concern.

But by the end of the day, Clear Spring had rallied to be the only team to walk away from South Hagerstown High School with two trophies.

Eddie Thomas and Leigh Newton won the mixed doubles title, edging Smithsburg's Shannon Huntzberry and Nick Sowers 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Then in the last match, J.R. Mills and Derek Belz won the boys doubles title with a narrow victory over Ben Graff and Matt Keefer of Williamsport, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

"We were on the edge of our seats in both matches," Clear Spring coach Amy Rohm said. "It also shows that it could have gone either way and that there is a lot of talent on both teams. It is exactly what we want to see in finals matches."

In other action, North Hagerstown sophomore Joe Brooks (17-0) defeated his younger brother, Mike (17-1), 6-3, 6-3, for the boys singles title, the first loss of the season for the freshman.

"It was tied 3-3 in both sets and I was a little worried for a while," Joe Brooks said. "I just tried to stay calm after that and I didn't try to rush things. I just kept trying to stay focused."

North Hagerstown coach Lance Baker was impressed with the Brooks brothers.

"They played very competitive against each other," Baker said. "Neither one of them likes to lose, but they show good sportsmanship towards each other."

Sophomore Sadia Shafi won the girls singles title 6-3, 6-2, over senior Lexi Salvagni, her Smithsburg teammate and the defending champion.

"I knew that I had to play aggressively, because Lexi is consistent," Shafi said. "I just wanted to move the ball around."

Abby Creek and Amy Spoonire won the girls doubles title, defeating their Williamsport teammates Holli Weaver and Katie Benisek 6-3, 6-0.

The semifinals and championship matches of the Maryland District I Region Tennis Tournament will be played on Saturday at South beginning at 9 a.m.

The quarterfinals will be held on Friday at 4 PM. The mens singles, womens singles and the mens doubles will be at South; while the womens doubles and the mixed doubles will be at North.
