Hagerstown citizens honored

April 22, 1998

The City of Hagerstown's first citizen and corporate awards were handed out Tuesday night during a reception at City Hall.

Margaret Washington received the citizen award for raising funds for 15 years to take underprivileged youth in the Jonathan Street area to amusement parks.




LeRoy Myers Jr., owner of Myers Building Systems Inc., received the corporate donor award for his work with the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex and the Hagerstown Business Park.




Charlie Sekula, owner of Schmankerl Stube restaurant, received the business award for his work to revitalize downtown.




James Sutherland, executive vice president of manufacturing operations for C.M. Offray & Son Inc., accepted the corporate award on behalf of the firm. Offray, also known as Maryland Ribbon, received the award for the company's commitment to the area, illustrated by an expansion.

Dr. Martin Gallagher, board president of the Community Free Clinic, accepted the nonprofit award on behalf of the clinic. The clinic has given free and low-cost health services to city residents for several years.
